Tarangire the paradise of elephants and baobabs
Tarangire National Park has some of the highest population density of elephants as compared to anywhere in Tanzania, and its sparse vegetation, strewn with baobab and acacia trees, makes it a beautiful and distinctive location to visit. Located just a few hours drive from the town of Arusha, Tarangire is a popular stop for people travelling through the northern safari circuit on their way to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. The park extends into two game controlled areas and the wildlife is allowed to move freely throughout. Before the rains, droves of gazelles, wildebeests, zebras, and giraffes migrate to Tarangire National Park’s scrub plains where the last grazing land still remains. Tarangire offers an unparalleled game viewing, and during the dry season elephants abound. Families of the pachyderms play around the ancient trunks of baobab trees and strip acacia bark from the thorn trees for their afternoon meal. Breathtaking views of the Maasai Steppe and the mountains in the south make a stopover at Tarangire a memorable experience.
Lake Manyara
Located beneath the cliffs of the Manyara Escarpment, on the edge of the Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park offers varied ecosystems, incredible bird life, and breathtaking views. Located on the way to Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, Lake Manyara National Park is worth a stop in its own right. Its ground water forests, bush plains, baobab strewn cliffs, and algae-streaked hot springs offer incredible ecological variety in a small area, rich in wildlife and incredible numbers of birds. The alkaline soda of Lake Manyara is home to an incredible array of bird life that thrives on its brackish waters. Pink flamingo stoop and graze by the thousands colourful specks against the grey minerals of the lake shore. Yellow-billed storks swoop and corkscrew on thermal winds rising up from the escarpment, and herons flap their wings against the sun-drenched sky. Even reluctant bird-watchers will find something to watch and marvel at within the national park. Lake Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions are another reason to pay a visit to this park.
Lake Natron&Oldonyo Lengai
This spectacular area sits just north east of the Ngorongoro Crater and forms part of Africa’s immense Great Rift Valley. Nestled between rolling volcanic hills and deep craters, Lake Natron sits at the lowest point of the rift valley – 600m above sea level – and is probably the world’s most caustic body of water. This area is hot and often very dry and dusty – so certainly for the more intrepid traveler. But for those who do choose to visit Natron, they are rewarded with an area that is far off the beaten track and sees relatively little tourism. It is also some of the most dramatic scenery in Tanzania and the journey here is worth it for the views alone. The drive to Lake Natron takes around three hours from Mto wa Mbu (beside Lake Manyara). It is hot but with the Rift Valley rising up on your left hand side, the landscape is increasingly dramatic. You will soon focus on the scenery: looking around, the views are spectacular. Drive deeper, and green vegetation gives way to a sparse, dusty landscape. Only the occasional Maasai homestead now dots the landscape. To the north of this track stands a handful of great mounds – the remains of extinct volcanoes. These are soon dwarfed by the sight of Kerimasi Crater and, finally, the active Ol Doinyo Lengai. To finally reach Lake Natron, you’ll then drive around this imposing volcano – perhaps keeping your eyes on its smoking crown. It’s about a five-hour drive from Lake Natron to reach the safari camps of the Serengeti’s Loliondo area.
Gombe Stream National park
Gombe Stream National Park is located in western Kigoma Region, Tanzania, some 20 km north of Kigoma. Established in 1968, Gombe is the smallest national park in Tanzania, with only 52 sq. km of forest running along the hills of the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. It is located only 100km north of Mahale Mountains National Park and is accessible only by boat. The terrain is distinguished by steep valleys, and the forest vegetation ranges from grassland to alpine bamboo to tropical rainforest. Gombe Stream is best known as the place where Jane Goodall did her pioneering studies on chimpanzees, beginning in the 1960s. It’s one of the two places in Tanzania for a chimpanzee safari. The chimps don’t roam as far in the wet summer season so may be easier to find on walks and hikes through the forest. It might be better to visit between February and June, or during November and December when there is a higher likelihood of being able to observe the chimps while they are less active. There are no guarantees, but most guests allow 2 days for a chimpanzee trek.

Jambo (Hello), We have dreamed of a safari in Tanzania for several years and we have finally experienced a dream week. This week, very intense because we wanted to make the most of it, was pure joy which put stars in our eyes for several years. We got to know the famous Big Five in their world as well as a multitude of animals who live together in a magnificent natural environment. We invited ourselves to their home and they were kind enough to accept us. It was so wonderful to see them evolve in their infinite domain and with total respect for their wild life! A huge THANK YOU to Yvonne, the organizer of our trip, who was able to listen to us and advise us to offer us a tailor-made tour that exceeded our expectations. With Yvonne, we are not just a file number, we are her hosts and she does her best to satisfy us. Throughout our journey, she was present, responsive, human, and with a lot of kindness towards us. We would also like to thank our driver and guide who was available very early in the morning, always listening to us and very patient with us. Thanks to his lynx eyes, we were able to see many animals that were not visible at first glance, including a magnificent leopard which blended into the middle of lush vegetation. Yvonne will also be able to advise you perfectly if you wish to extend your stay in Zanzibar or in one of the nearby islands. For our part, we spent a heavenly week in an all-inclusive in the North-West of Zanzibar. Don’t hesitate to do the same, it prolongs the dream and adds many stars!
